The Legal Aid Clinic for Kirit P. Mehta School of Law - NMIMS was inaugurated on 27th January, 2018. The inaugural ceremony was conducted on the first floor, Mithibai Building. The ceremony was attended by the chief guest Adv. Flavia Agnes (Co – Founder, Majlis) and eminent dignitaries such as Shri. Kirit P. Mehta (Member, SVKM Board of Trustees), Shri. Shalin Sunandan Divatia (Hon. Jt. Sec.-SVKM & Mentor), Shri. Sharad Mhaisker (Pro – Vice Chancellor, NMIMS) & Shri. Harshal Shah, (Mentor, Kirit P. Mehta School of Law.). Prof. (Dr.) Partitosh Basu (In – Charge Dean, Kirit P. Mehta School of Law) welcomed all the dignitaries, faculty members, nonteaching staff and students with great warmth and pleasure.
The dignitaries touched upon the need for legal aid clinic from the point of view of society that can be instrumental in helping people access justice and make lawyers sensitive to the needs of society. Shri Kiritbhai shared his view on the growing legal fees charged by lawyers leaving those who cannot afford away from the reach of justice, hence he stressed what the NMIMS Kirit P Mehta School of Law - legal aid clinic must to do to contribute for society, even if might be treated as a humble beginning.
Adv. Flavia Agnes, in her guest speech, spoke at length and stressed upon various kinds of vision for the legal aid clinic that is should ideally endorse. She stressed that engaging with the Court system is a necessity. Hence, the legal aid clinic should endorse a system to encourage engaging with court systems. She also shared her experience and suggested that the Legal Aid Clinic should work hard to reach the people and win their trust. This, she stressed will also help integrate law with society and develop better litigation lawyers in the future.
